Drivers urged to prioritise tyre safety this Transport Month

Tyres are your only contact with the road, making them crucial for steering, braking and control

With the October school holidays coinciding with Transport Month, many South Africans are preparing for a much-needed break.

But before packing bags or finalising travel plans, road users are urged to put vehicle safety first.

“Transport Month is a timely reminder of the importance of road safety,” said Dean Horn, MD of Super Tyres.

“Safe transport connects families, creates opportunities, and ultimately saves lives. Over the Easter holidays alone, South Africa recorded 141 crashes and 167 fatalities, highlighting how critical it is to ensure your car is roadworthy. A well-maintained car, particularly tyres and shocks, is vital for keeping you and your loved ones safe.”

Tyres: Your first line of safety

Tyres are your only contact with the road, making them crucial for steering, braking and control. Before travelling:

• Check pressure when tyres are cold

• Inspect tread depth—1.6mm or more is safest

• Look for cracks, bulges or wear, and replace tyres older than five years, including the spare

• Test alignment and shocks to avoid uneven wear and poor handling

Road safety basics

Beyond tyres, schedule rest stops every two hours, stick to speed limits, and increase following distances in bad weather. Always ensure seatbelts are fastened, and remain alert to pedestrians and animals, especially in rural areas.

“Many road accidents can be prevented with the correct preparation,” Horn added. “Checking your vehicle before your trip gives peace of mind and lets you focus on enjoying your holiday.”
