October 8 is International Podiatry Day! That’s right, an entire day dedicated to your feet.
Did you know, an average person walks about 7 500 steps a day – the equivalent of 5 laps around the equator in a lifetime?
But how often do you dedicate time to ensuring your feet are pampered and treated for various ailments?
Well, it’s time to put your best foot forward this International Podiatry Day! That’s right, an entire day dedicated to your feet.
8 October casts a spotlight on foot health while also acknowledging the role of podiatrists, who care for feet.
Lynsey Hammond, the MD of Kroko – a South African manufacturer of skincare and footcare products – says foot health cannot be overstated.
She highlights the importance of at-home care, but encourages people to visit podiatrists for ‘any recurring foot health issues to ensure their feet are protected, and to treat any serious issues before they impact the overall health and wellness.’
Fast, fun foot facts
*The foot has 33 joints and more than 100 ligaments.
* Each foot has 26 bones, so there are 52 foot bones in all – 25.24% of the body’s total bone count.
* The foot has around 125 000 sweat glands producing around 230ml of sweat a day.
* The average person walks about 7 500 steps a day – the equivalent of 5 laps around the equator in a lifetime.
* The foot has more nerve endings per cm2 than any other part of the body.
* The skin on your feet is thicker than any other body part.
* 20% to 30% of the world’s population have a longer second toe than big toe (called a Morton’s Toe). This can increase the risk of calluses.
* The Achilles is the strongest tendon in the entire body.
* Abnormalities with the feet are often the first sign of another health problem.
