Plans to reduce R34 congestion

Transport MEC Siboniso Duma announces plans to reduce traffic congestion, minimise trucks on R34 amid ongoing road repairs

Trucking companies will be asked to use the R66 towards eShowe to reduce traffic congestion on the R34, which connects Richards Bay with Mpumalanga.

This is according to KZN Transport MEC Siboniso Duma during his oversight visit checking on the rehabilitation of the R34 on Saturday.

“I have also instructed contractors to reduce stop-and-go traffic management time from 30 to 15 minutes, especially during peak hour, ” he said, adding that the stop-and-go traffic management will not run during the festive period from 13 December.

Duma says contractors have tried to rehabilitate alternative routes, but the main focus is on completing the project on time.

“The problem is the trucks, and the contractors are behind schedule due to the rain. But we are going to have a meeting …as we want these projects completed on time.”

“I am proud of the progress made, I am happy that all companies are on site,” Duma said.

“We urge motorists and residents to be more patient. We understand that when there is development, there is always some inconvenience. These projects are scheduled to be completed in between 21 and 27 months.”
