Security company highlights crime trends in run-up to festive season

AS KwaZulu-Natal gears up for the festive season, recent crime data reveals both improvements and ongoing challenges for community safety.

While Blue Security’s August–September report, alongside SAPS and Stats SA findings, which shows mixed trends, focuses on Durban, Zululanders and all KZN residents should take note.

The report shows that theft remains the most reported crime, while armed robberies rose during the period under review.

Burglary and trespassing saw slight declines, but opportunistic crimes appear to increase as year-end activity grows.

Evenings between 6pm and midnight are the peak period, with Mondays and Tuesdays reporting the most incidents.

Stephen Wimborne, commercial director at Blue Security, stresses that consistent use of security measures such as alarms, lighting and surveillance is key.

Residents are urged to focus on secure perimeters, functional alarms, and well-lit outdoor areas to create safer neighbourhoods in partnership with security companies and community forums.
