One person died and four were injured in a head-on collision earlier this (Monday) morning.

The crash, involving a light motor vehicle and a bakkie transporting bananas, occurred at around 11am on the road between eSikhaleni and the N2, in the vicinity of the S bend.

According to reports from the scene, the car was travelling towards the University of Zululand and the bakkie in the opposite direction when the two collided.

The car veered down the embankment and burst into flames.

The deceased was driving the car, while four occupants who were travelling in the bakkie sustained serious but not critical injuries.

Mounties EMS responded to the call-out and stabilised the injured occupants – one man and three women – before transporting them to hospital.

The road was closed by police for about three hours while the forensics unit investigated the scene.
