Jackal killed on Richards Bay road

Motorists urged to be cautious of animals on the road after jackal is killed by a bakkie in Wildenweide in Richards Bay

Slow down and save the wildlife.

This plea was made by concerned citizens after a side-striped jackal was hit and killed by a bakkie in Wildenweide in Richards Bay on Friday afternoon.

A motorist witnessed the incident, which was then reported on the Richards Bay Wildlife WhatsApp group.

Not sure if the animal was still alive, fending off people who wanted the jackal for its meat, the motorist was assisted by Infinite Security Solutions personnel to load it into her vehicle so she could rush it to a nearby vet.

However, it is believed to have died on impact.

“In 31 years, I have not seen a side-striped or black-backed jackal in Richards Bay. It yet again confirms the wildlife around us that we are not even aware of. And now there’s one less in Richards Bay,” said wildlife warrior, Miriam Otto.

A Richards Bay Wildlife group member added, “This confirms there is a need for an area or greenbelt to be fenced off to protect wildlife in general.

“By connecting green belts, safe movement between the areas is possible for animals. Hopefully, there are progressive citizens who can demonstrate practical solutions.”

Otto encourages motorists to be cautious of animals on the road.

Reporting injured or dead wildlife can be done on the Richards Bay Wildlife WhatsApp group.
