uMhlathuze warns residents of municipal account scam

City of uMhlathuze cautions residents against fake messages about disconnections and arrears, urging immediate reporting of scams.

The City of uMhlathuze has urged all residents to guard against falling victim to fraudsters.

This after the municipality announced on Thursday that fraudulent messages are doing the rounds on WhatsApp, SMS and other platforms.

“These messages falsely claim to be from municipal officials and refer to scheduled disconnections or arrears on municipal accounts,” reads the city’s warning.

“Please note, the City of uMhlathuze has not authorised any individual or company to send such messages. Official communication from the municipality is done through formal letters and emails from official municipal domains.

“Residents are urged not to share personal details or make any payments to individuals claiming to act on behalf of the municipality. If you receive such a message, do not respond. Instead, report it immediately to the uMhlathuze Call Centre on 0800 222 827.”
