WATCH: 1 killed in John Ross highway crash, schoolchildren involved

Early Friday morning crash on John Ross highway leaves one person dead, and schoolchildren injured

One person died in an early morning crash at the Alton intersection on the John Ross highway today (Friday).

The accident, which occurred just after 6am, involved two vehicles: a bakkie transporting schoolchildren and a BMW.

The driver of the van was declared dead at the scene, while some of the schoolchildren sustained injuries and were transported to The Bay and Melomed hospitals. The driver of the BMW is reported to have escaped serious injury.

While ambulance services, the City of uMhlathuze Fire & Rescue, and traffic officers were quickly on scene, the collision caused major traffic delays at the busy Alton intersection.

This led to congestion, forcing emergency services to close the John Ross highway and divert traffic at the Mondi intersection.
