Zululand anglers bag the bronze

Angler’s angles from 'The Bay'

The Zululand Shore Angling Association team recently competed at the South African Shore Angling Association Grand Masters Nationals, hosted by West Coast Angling in Langebaan.

Despite challenging conditions, the team staged one of the most remarkable comebacks in the tournament’s history.

Over the three-day event, they climbed from 21st place out of 22 teams on day 1 to 6th on day 2, ultimately securing an impressive third-place bronze medal on the final day.

Individual performances were equally noteworthy.

Willie Prinsloo finished 4th overall, Andre Mellet was once again selected to represent South Africa, and Johan van Ede earned selection to compete in the Gus Kolner Tournament in October next year.

It was a stellar showing all around – one that deserves recognition from the broader angling community.

After a poor start, the ZSAA team leap-frogged to third place on the final day of the Grand Masters Nationals in Langebaan

Summer catches

With summer now almost upon us, the famous Zululand ‘flat fish’ have arrived.

Anglers are reporting strong catches of brown rays, honeycomb rays, butterfly rays and giant guitarfish.

In addition, the large female ragged tooth sharks are migrating north toward their breeding grounds at Cape Vidal, and several impressive specimens have already been hooked and landed along the coast.

Prime areas to target these powerful species include Hlobane Beach, Mtunzini Banks, and Tugela North Bank, where anglers using substantial fish baits can expect exciting battles with these large predators.
