Two men rescued after being caught in rip current during swim at St Lucia Main Beach

The bravery of one good Samaritan and the quick response of the local Sea Rescue crew saved two men from drowning in St Lucia last week.

The men had been swimming at Main Beach when they were caught in rip currents during the spring tide on Tuesday afternoon.

“Our NSRI crew responded to our NSRI St Lucia station rescue base, where [our] JetRIB rescue craft was towed to the beach.

“On arrival on the scene, we found one man had been rescued from the surf zone by a good Samaritan believed to be a work colleague of the man in distress,” said NSRI St Lucia station commander Melinda Snyman.

“The second man was seen in distress at the back breakers. Our NSRI JetRIB was launched and reached the casualty, rescuing him onto the craft and bringing him safely to shore. He was not injured.”

Snyman said the first casualty was in a serious condition suffering non-fatal drowning symptoms.

“With no ambulances immediately available, our NSRI medics transported the two men to our rescue base, continuing with medical treatment on the seriously injured patient, who was transported to hospital by colleagues, where he is recovering.”
