Home Affairs launches ground-breaking online portal to reinstate SA citizenship
New digital portal lets South Africans worldwide verify and reinstate citizenship instantly, following landmark Constitutional Court ruling.
A major digital breakthrough has arrived for hundreds of thousands of South Africans both at home and abroad.
The Department of Home Affairs has officially launched its new Citizenship Reinstatement Portal; a fully online system that allows eligible citizens to verify and reinstate their South African citizenship from anywhere in the world.
This marks a historic turning point in Home Affairs’ digital transformation programme, and follows one of the most consequential Constitutional Court rulings in recent years.
Why the portal matters
On 6 May, the Constitutional Court delivered a landmark ruling in the case of Democratic Alliance v Minister of Home Affairs.
At the centre of the dispute was the South African Citizenship Act – a clause that automatically stripped South Africans of their citizenship if they obtained another nationality without applying for prior permission.
For decades, this caused thousands of people to unknowingly lose their SA citizenship when taking up a second passport.
But the Constitutional Court declared the provision unconstitutional, confirming that:
• No one should lose their citizenship automatically or without due process
• All individuals who lost their citizenship this way – dating back to 6 October 1995 – are now considered never to have lost it at all
Digital fix for decades-long problem
To process this enormous ruling efficiently – especially for South Africans living abroad – Home Affairs has built the Citizenship Reinstatement Portal, the first system of its kind in the country.
No queues. No paperwork. No embassies. No in-person visits.
Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber says the portal uses cutting-edge technology traditionally seen only in global tech leaders.
“It uses facial recognition and machine learning to verify your identity and securely correct your record on the population register – all from the comfort of your own home, anywhere in the world, instantly,” he said.
This system also lays the foundation for SA’s future roll-out of Digital ID, which will eventually modernise everything, from identity verification to immigration management.
What the portal can do:
• Secure login and authentication
• Biometric facial verification
• Document verification powered by machine learning
• Direct integration with the National Population Register
The technology automatically checks whether your citizenship was ever revoked and guides you through the next steps.
How to reinstate your citizenship online:
1. South Africans abroad or locally can begin the process at myhomeaffairsonline.dha.gov.za
2. Create an online profile using your email address.
3. Verify your identity using your SA ID number.
4. Complete biometric facial verification through your device’s camera.
5. Receive instant results confirming whether your citizenship is still intact or needs reinstating.
6. If reinstatement is required, the portal will guide you through the quick confirmation process.
7. Many people will find their citizenship remains valid — and the system will tell you immediately.
As Schreiber puts it: “Home Affairs is building a digital service delivery revolution, storming into the future to transform South Africa into a world leader in smart government that delivers dignity for all.”
