Zululand actors seize opportunity at regional TV series auditions

Aspiring actors put their best foot forward at auditions held in Richards Bay over the weekend

Aspiring Zululand actors put on their best performance at auditions hosted by Elinomusa Iqhikiza Production over the weekend.

This after the City of uMhlathuze last week issued a clarion call for all isiZulu actors to audition for a project being billed as one of the biggest television series to be shot in the region.

The municipality’s Department of Arts and Culture played a pivotal role in ensuring the programme’s smooth execution, while the production team, led by directors Xolani Sithole and Mbali Cele, ensured it was engaging and inspiring for participants and observers alike.

“The calibre of talent we witnessed speaks volumes about the potential within our communities,” said Sithole. “This project will not only showcase artistic excellence, but also contribute to employment creation, district tourism exposure, and the economic strengthening of uMhlathuze.”

For many artists, the auditions represented a long-awaited turning point.

Local actress Akhona Zikode from Mandlazini said, “It is encouraging to see uMhlathuze finally taking acting seriously.

As actors, we often feel overlooked and are forced to travel to Durban or Gauteng for opportunities, which comes with risks. This initiative is a step in the right direction.”

“The judges made us feel at ease with their friendliness. From auditions I’ve attended before, it’s usually nerve-wracking because judges can be harsh and intimidating. But this was my first time truly enjoying auditions,” added Mzikhona Nkwanyana from Mtubatuba.

Industry specialists formed the judging panel. Among them was Gift Marovatsanga, a lecturer at the University of Zululand; actress Mbalenhle Cele, recognised for her role as Tiny on Smoke and Mirrors; Nokulunga Ncanana, head of dramatic arts at Aquadene High School; and actress Makhosazana Ndlovu of Scandal (Petunia) and Makoti (Judith).

Joining them was Sbo Mhlongo, former producer at 1KZN TV and an accomplished director; as well as Lungisani Ndlovu, a director, scriptwriter and Cupcake on Uzalo.
