Craft, recycling projects help people with disabilities earn an income
Empangeni NPO Ithalente Centre empowering people with disabilities, calls for community support to keep doors open
Zululanders with disabilities are being empowered with practical skills to earn money and become self-sustaining.
This has been made possible by local NPO, Ithalente Centre, which provides hands-on programmes for attendees.
Sixteen people are actively engaged at the centre, working on various projects under the guidance of chairperson Thuleleni Ntshangase.
“Our goal is to enrich the lives of people living with disabilities, boost their self-worth, and empower them to contribute meaningfully to society.
“We focus on electronic recycling and specialise in craftwork such as beading, sewing and creating traditional attire, including imbheshu and isidwaba,” Ntshangase explained.
Help needed
Despite their efforts, the centre faces several challenges.
One obstacle is the lack of consistent suppliers for the materials needed for craftwork. Additionally, the centre’s building is in urgent need of renovation to provide a safer and more functional environment for participants.
“We rely heavily on donations and kindly request any support in the form of materials or funds to help renovate our facility and continue our work,” said Ntshangase.
“It is through generous contributions that the Ithalente Centre provides life-changing experiences for people living with disabilities. Your support will make a real difference.”
Donations can be delivered to Ithalente Centre’s offices on the R34 in Mtimona, Empangeni.
