Parents, pupils warned against risky matric celebrations

Matrics urged to 'celebrate smartly, celebrate safely, celebrate with dignity'

Parents and pupils have been warned to be cautious during matric celebrations as final exams come to an end, with the Department of Social Development (DSD) condemning ‘pens down’ parties, reports The Witness.

Via social media, the department congratulated the matrics on reaching this milestone.

“As you plan your celebrations, remember that safety comes first. Avoid unsupervised ‘pens down’ parties that can spiral into danger.

Celebrate smartly, celebrate safely, celebrate with dignity,” said DSD.

Matrics are urged to be safe, and to note that remote venues or unverified hosts are red flags.

“If you suspect dangerous gatherings or see promoters advertising shady ‘pens down’ events, report them to your school, SAPS, or parents.

“If your plans involve no adult supervision, questionable venues, and safety is not guaranteed, say ‘no’. Your life and future matter more than any risky gathering.

“Parents and caregivers must remain involved. Your responsibility does not end with the final exam – know where your children are and who they are celebrating with,” urged the department.

Earlier this month, the KZN Department of Education issued a similarly strong warning to matric pupils as ‘pens down’ celebrations gained momentum across the province, urging pupils to avoid gatherings that often end in violence, vandalism, or tragedy.

Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka said, while matric pupils deserve to celebrate completing their examinations, they must do so safely.

“While we commend our pupils for completing this critical chapter of their academic journey, we cannot condone activities that place them and others at risk. Pens down parties often end in tragedy, with fatal crashes and incidents that bring lifelong sadness instead of joy.

“We urge our young people to celebrate responsibly and to prioritise their safety and the well-being of their communities,” said Hlomuka.

The SAPS has also urged the Class of 2025 heading to rage festivals to practice safety and celebrate responsibly.

Parents should weigh the risks and rewards of allowing children to attend festivities, and only consider festivals that are held in a safe, controlled environment under the supervision of adults.

“Make sure you read up about safety at the festival, where to stay, how Rage Rides operate, and everything else you need to know to plan your rage festival experience,” said SAPS.

The police reiterated that those attending matric rage parties and pens down festivities are urged to avoid dangerous and risky behaviour.
