Nkandla water project to benefit 4 000 households

King Cetshwayo District Municipality officially hands over long-awaited Inkandla Vutshini Regional Water Project

Residents in wards 12 and 13 and parts of wards 8 and 10 of King Cetshwayo District Muncipality are celebrating after finally receiving water.

Some 4 000 households benefitted from the long-awaited Inkandla Vutshini Regional Water Project which was officially handed over on Friday.

King Cetshwayo District Mayor, Skhumbuzo Dlamini, shared his appreciation for the role played by amakhosi in the project inception.

“When we took over in 2021, we discovered that some beneficiaries had taps in their homesteads, but no water. We invested more than R99-million to get water from the uThukela River to supplement the existing eNtinge Dam, so that we could supply everyone,” Dlamini said.

He said a R160-million project in Middledrift was under way, with upgrades to the water purification plant from 10ML/day to 20ML/day.

“This project will supply water to about 3 645 houses in Nkandla Municipality, including various Tribal Authorities such as Nxamalala, Shange, amaChube, Khanyile, iZidlozi, and Magwaza.

Other water projects mentioned:

– A R14.3-million project in Ward 9, Dina area under iNkosi Ntuli.
– The R1-million Ophindweni Water Treatment Plant in Ward 6 and 11 to supply 734 households.
– The R400 000 renovated iPikiliyeza Water Treatment Plant in Ward 7 to supply 423 households.
– The R1.6-million upgraded KwaBadala Waste-Water Treatment Plant for residents from KwaBadala Old Age Home.
– The R500 000 upgrade of Leister engines at 11 small water schemes in Wards 14, 9, 6, 8, 1, 5, and 3.
– Plans to change three engines in Ward 4 at KwaNontshiza, Ward 2 at eCacaneni, and Ward 14 at eNkolotshane.
