Why carry-on travel is taking off
Ditch the heavy bags — smart packing, versatile outfits and minimalist habits are making carry-on travel the stress-free way to explore the world.
Travelling is difficult enough without having to manage heavy luggage filled with items you’re mostly not going to even need.
More and more people are realising the minimalist approach to travel is actually where it’s at, and here’s why:
· You avoid the long airport queues to check in luggage
· You avoid the long wait for luggage to be delivered
· You avoid unnecessary costs, as many airlines charge for luggage
· You reduce stress when travelling with too much
· Your luggage NEVER gets lost – always a likelihood
· It makes travelling between connecting flights much easier
How to pack just a carry on
Packing lightly is a skill, but once you’ve mastered it, you won’t look back. Here’s how to do it effectively without feeling like you’re sacrificing style or comfort.
1. Plan your outfits
The biggest mistake people make is packing ‘just in case’. Come on, you probably rotate the same 5 items at home, you’re probably not going to need that ball gown!
Instead:
· Plan your outfits based on your actual itinerary.
· Think about activities, weather and dress codes.
· Build outfits around repeatable pieces.
2. Pack versatile clothing
Choose clothes that mix, match, and layer easily rather than unique items, and be prepared to repeat outfits – nobody is going to care!
Consider:
· Neutral colours
· Light layers
· Basics that work together
· Outerwear that can be dressed up or down
3. Prepare for laundry
If you’re travelling for more than a week, do a quick load of washing.
Options include:
· Accommodation with washing machines
· Local laundromats
· Hand-washing small items in the bathroom sink
4. Skip the souvenirs
When space is limited, skip bulky souvenirs you’ll forget about later.
Instead, choose:
· Postcards
· Photos
· Small local items
· Consumables
5. Pack travel-size liquids
Carry-on allowances mean all liquids must be under 100ml.
Solutions:
· Buy travel-size toiletries
· Use refillable bottles
· Opt for solid skincare bars
· Place them all in a clear reusable bag so there’s no repacking at security
6. Roll your clothes
Rolling can save serious space, especially for soft fabrics. If you’re worried about creases, roll clothes on the return trip and fold them for the outbound one.
7. Limit your shoes
Shoes take up so much space. Three is the absolute max. Two is better.
Stick to:
· One comfortable walking pair (wear this during travel)
· One versatile pair for going out
· Optional lightweight sandals
8. Minimise tech
One charging cable that works for all devices is your best option. One Kindle instead of three books is a game-changer. Leave the hairdryer behind – most venues have their own.
Once you try it, you’ll likely never check in luggage again!
