Unlicensed vehicles, drunk drivers are nabbed in KZN

KwaZulu-Natal counts major successes in nabbing drunk drivers, with more than 1 561 motorists arrested since 15 August

More than 3 900 vehicles have been stopped at roadblocks in KZN since the start of December, with just over 50 found to be unlicensed.

This comes as the deadline for KZN-registered vehicles to migrate to the ‘ZN’ number plate lapsed, with motorists who have failed to comply liable for a fine as of Monday.

The recent figures come amid ongoing operations across the province aimed at reducing traffic violations and curbing road accidents.

According to the KZN Department of Transport, a total of 111 motorists were charged for speeding on 1 December alone.

While commending the successes of law enforcement operations across KZN, Transport MEC Siboniso Duma expressed concern with the ongoing carnage on the roads.

Two fatalities were recorded on 1 December, compared with nine on the same day last year.

He noted major successes in nabbing drunk drivers, with more than 1 561 motorists arrested since 15 August.

These include operations undertaken in various districts, including King Cetshwayo, Zululand and uMkhanyakude.

Twenty drivers were arrested for drunk driving in an operation in Ulundi over the weekend.

“One suspected criminal was arrested with a stolen car,” said Duma. “We are determined to clean up our road networks throughout the corners of the province. We have been observing motorists in Nongoma, Vryheid and Pongola. We are working well with SAPS as assigned by provincial commissioner Lt General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.”

In a response to the ZO recently, KZN Transport spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya warned that these operations would intensify over the festive season.

“We will intensify #NenzaniLEzweni Operation throughout King Cetshwayo District and beyond to ensure adherence to the rules of the road.

“We appreciate the overwhelming messages of support from members of the public. We want to clean up our road networks,” said Sibiya.
