WATCH: No nonsense this festive season

Motorists warned to tread carefully this festive season as City of uMhlathuze adopts 'no nonsense' approach on the roads

Kicking off the festive season with a strong police presence, the city of uMhlathuze launched a large multi-disciplinary roadblock on the N2 eSikhaleni intersection last Friday.

“All I’m asking of our residents is that, while we put the responsibility on these men and women to protect us on the road, we also have a responsibility as road users,” said City of uMhlathuze Mayor Xolani Ngwezi.

“I also urge patience, because some accidents happen when road users are just impatient. Don’t overtake where you are not supposed to overtake. It’s better to arrive late than dead or injured.”

Road blitzes take effect in province

According to the KZN Department of Transport, KZN road fatalities have dropped since RTI (Road Traffic Inspectorate) intensified festive season roadblock blitzes.
KZN MEC for Transport, Siboniso Duma, said every road fatality is ‘one too many’.

“It is for this reason that RTI is clamping down on motorists found to be violating traffic rules,” said Duma.

He reported that fatal crashes from August to October dropped by 5 per cent from 502 in 2024 to 478 in 2025.

Fatalities also dropped 5 per cent from 582 between August and October in 2024, to 553 during the same period in 2025.
