WATCH: Alton sewage spill remedied after spillage reported

An overflowing sump at ALTON 2 pump station discharged sewage into nearby bush

The sight of municipal sewage being diverted directly into the surrounding environment last Thursday so annoyed an Alton businessman that he felt compelled to take action.

Photos he sent to the ZO showed a pipe from an overflowing sump at the ALTON 2 station, discharging sewage and stinking waste material, and flooding the adjacent bush area.

The Richards Bay Clean Air Association (RBCAA) was notified and the complaint was soon escalated to the Department of Water & Sanitation (DWS).

“This is totally unacceptable, especially since this is by far not the first complaint of this nature we have received this year,” said RBCAA public officer Sandy Camminga.

However, the City of uMhlathuze responded fairly promptly, with a large super sucker arriving on scene on Wednesday…
