Councillor in hot water after allegedly assaulting his mother and sister

A WARD 9 councillor in the uMfolozi Municipality is expected to return to court next Tuesday following his arrest for allegedly assaulting his mother and sister at their home in the KwaMthethwa area.

Councillor Sibonelo Mthethwa was reportedly involved in a domestic altercation during which the two women were assaulted. He was subsequently arrested and is facing a charge of assault.

The ANC’s Dondotha branch has strongly condemned the incident, describing it as both a serious criminal and political matter. In a statement, the branch said it “strongly and unequivocally condemns the violent actions of the IFP Ward 9 councillor in uMfolozi Municipality, who allegedly assaulted his mother and sister and is currently in police custody.”

The ANC also expressed solidarity with the victims and their families, urging communities to reject gender-based and domestic violence and to support survivors.

Confirming the arrest, King Cetshwayo District police spokesperson Captain Siyanda Shangase said the accused is expected to return to court on 30 December for a formal bail application.

Meanwhile, ZO has reliably learnt from a municipal source that Mthethwa’s matter is being handled by the office of the council Speaker, which is expected to determine his political future.
