Illegal immigration, cross-border crime operation yields positive results

More than 300 arrests made as KZN Transport MEC praises Empangeni RTI border crime crackdown operations.

KZN Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma has commended the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) team in the Empangeni region for making swift arrests along border areas and key routes linked to cross-border crime.

The arrests were carried out across three districts — uMkhanyakude, Zululand and King Cetshwayo — during the provincial #NenzaniLaEzweni campaign.

“We are seeing positive results following the deployment of our energetic RTI team from the Empangeni region to border areas and other routes commonly used for cross-border crime,” said Duma.

During the operation, more than 27 100 vehicles were stopped and searched, with a particular focus on the borders between KZN, Mozambique and Eswatini.

“Several motorists were arrested in Manguzi, Mbazwana and Jozini, with a special operation also conducted in Thengani,” added Duma.

Statistics recorded from 1 December covering the uMkhanyakude, Zululand and King Cetshwayo districts revealed the following:
•     12 illegal immigrants arrested
•     281 motorists arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol
•     4 118 motorists charged with various offences
•     273 motorists found driving without valid driver’s licences
•     364 unlicensed vehicles detected

Duma said the RTI would continue working closely with local traffic officers across municipalities, the SAPS, SANDF and Home Affairs Immigration Units to strengthen law enforcement efforts.
