HIV prevention injection to be launched in February
Lenacapavir gives people an additional, powerful option to protect themselves against HIV, especially those who struggle to take pills every day
Known colloquially as uLena, the HIV prevention injection Lenacapavir will be available at healthcare facilities across the province from February.
This was announced by KZN Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane during an event held in Madadeni on Wednesday, marking the official introduction of the drug, an injection administered only twice a year to prevent HIV infection.

Simelane described the introduction of the injection as a significant breakthrough in HIV prevention, noting that its long-acting nature offers sustained protection and reduces the risk associated with missing daily medication doses.
“Lenacapavir gives people an additional, powerful option to protect themselves against HIV, especially those who struggle to take pills every day,” she said.
However, the MEC cautioned that Lenacapavir should not be seen as a licence for risky behaviour.
“It does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections, nor does it prevent unplanned pregnancies. People must continue to use condoms, act responsibly, and protect both themselves and their partners,” she added.
