Call for businesses to review prices for school essentials

Trade union welcomes fuel price decrease for January, urges businesses to ease further financial pressure ahead of schools reopening

While a decrease in fuel prices is a welcome relief, there are calls for business owners to review their pricing for school essentials to ease further pressure on consumers.

Trade union UASA commended the significant January fuel price cuts, which are below R21 for the first time since early 2022.

Unleaded petrol (93) has decreased by 62 cents per litre, and unleaded petrol (95) has dropped by 66 cents per litre.

This means a litre of petrol now costs around R19.92 at the coast and approximately R20.75 inland.

“With back-to-school expenses approaching, UASA is pleased that the upcoming fuel price cuts will help ease financial pressures for parents and caregivers.

“This decrease will help families balance work and school-related costs,” said UASA spokesperson Abigail Moyo.

Diesel 0.05% (wholesale) decreased by 137 cents per litre, and diesel 0.005% (wholesale) decreased by 150 cents per litre, bringing the price of diesel to around R18.42 per litre inland and R17.59 per litre at the coast.
