According to police, cases are being opened daily involving members of the public who are targeted while walking in town or using their cellphones in public spaces.

In many instances, victims are robbed of their phones while walking, cycling or even running.
Richards Bay SAPS Lieutenant Colonel Debbie Ferreira urged residents to remain vigilant at all times and to avoid using their cellphones in public, particularly in busy areas.
“We advise members of the public to be alert and aware of their surroundings, as perpetrators are snatching cellphones directly from people’s hands,” said Ferreira.
She also warned of a rise in rental scams circulating on social media platforms, where victims are asked to pay deposits to secure rental properties that do not exist.
“We urge people responding to advertisements on Marketplace and WhatsApp groups to physically visit the premises and confirm that the rental is legitimate before paying any money,” she said.
In addition, Ferreira cautioned residents against online payment scams, where buyers send false proof of payment notifications to sellers.
“Always ensure the money reflects in your account before releasing any goods,” she said. “This applies to all online purchases – it is safest to view goods in person before buying.”
Ferreira said it was concerning how many people continue to fall victim to scams, and urged residents to exercise greater caution when conducting transactions.
