Education committee performs school checks

Committee conducts oversight visits to KZN schools, commends provincial matric results

KwaZulu-Natal’s special schools are in focus this week as the Education Portfolio Committee undertakes a School Functionality Programme

“We note the challenges facing this vulnerable group of schoolgoing children,” said Acting Chairperson of the Education Portfolio Committee, Hlengiwe Mavimbela.

“Through our programme, we will assess progress made to support these children and provide interventions where needed.”

During the visit, she commended the province for its top-ranking matric results for 2025.

“Throughout our oversight visits to schools and our interaction with the leadership of the department, we were assured that the focus was on the first-class ‘trophy’ – and the hard work, patience and commitment produced the positive results we have witnessed,” she said.

Mavimbela appealed to the department and communities to provide support to those who didn’t get a matric pass.

“They must know there are other available areas to explore, and that TVET colleges are providing the technical skills and knowledge needed to contribute to the well-being of our communities.

Mavimbela also commended teacher unions for playing an important part in producing the sterling work of the department.

“Without their collaboration and commitment of their members in classrooms, we would not have produced these results.”
