Under-resourced rural school defies odds to become Most Improved

ith a pass rate of 37% in 2024, the school improved to 69.6% in 2025

DESPITE critical challenges, Umvalo High School in Okhukho outside Ulundi emerged as the Most Improved School for its 2025 matric results.

The school governing body (SGB) has classified this as a Section 20 school, with its budget centrally managed.

As a result, procurement processes for essential resources to this rural school are often delayed and, in some instances, requests are not delivered at all.

Although Umvalo High School is designated as a science school, it does not have fully equipped laboratories to conduct practical lessons.

Pupils have to travel to neighbouring high schools that have the required facilities to complete their practical work, placing additional strain on pupils and teachers.

Despite these significant obstacles, the school has demonstrated remarkable resilience, resulting in a notable improvement in its academic performance.

In recognition of this achievement, Ulundi Mayor Wilson Ntshangase visited the school on Wednesday, handing over a R10 000 cheque, a certificate and a trophy.
“Their achievement serves as an inspiration to many schools facing similar conditions,” said Ntshangase.

With a pass rate of 37% in 2024, the school improved to 69.6% in 2025.
