Union rejects uMhlathuze mayoral gala dinner

No funds from municipal coffers will be used to finance Mayoral Gala Dinner, says city

SAMWU in the Shonamalanga Region has strongly condemned the decision by the City of uMmhlathuze to proceed with its Mayoral Gala Dinner, scheduled to be held tomorrow (Friday) at the Empangeni Civic Centre.

The majority member union says the glaring contradiction between the municipality’s alleged financial distress and its willingness to spend on ceremonial extravagance exposes a troubling disconnect between leadership priorities and the lived realities of workers and the community they serve.

SAMWU Shonamalanga regional secretary Zandile Gumede says this is not merely poor judgement, but reflects a failure of leadership, governance and accountability.

“Public funds are intended to advance service delivery, safeguard employee welfare and maintain critical infrastructure, not to fund unnecessary displays of luxury while workers’ basic rights and safety are compromised,” said Gumede.

“The credibility of the institution, the dignity of workers, and the trust of the community are at stake. Municipal leadership must choose between spectacle and service delivery. Workers and residents deserve governance that prioritises safety, accountability and responsible stewardship of public resources,” she said.

City responds

Responding on the matter, city communications manager Simphiwe Makhanya said the municipality is hosting the gala dinner in celebration of its 11th clean audit achievement.

“This celebration aims to recognise and encourage the hard-working employees whose commitment and professionalism have made this achievement possible,” he said.

“The event will be attended by key stakeholders and role players within the city and beyond, who have contributed to strengthening governance and supporting the municipality’s vision of excellence.”

He added that the city also wishes to clarify that no funds from the municipality’s coffers will be used to finance the event.

“We have noted with concern that some individuals are deliberately spreading misinformation regarding the funding of the gala dinner.

“The mayor, with his leadership collective, took a firm decision that, while it is important to celebrate this significant achievement, no municipal funds will be utilised to cover any costs associated with the event,” said Makhanya.
