Toll fees set to increase next month

Motorists to pay more at toll plazas as the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) announces fee adjustments effective in March

Zululand motorists travelling to and from Durban will, as of next month, have to cough up more in toll fees when travelling along the N2.

This as the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) has announced an increase in toll tariffs effective 1 March.

The Mtunzini toll plaza will cost light motor vehicle drivers R63.50, while R18.50 will be charged at the Mvoti Plaza. The oThongathi Mainline Plaza will now cost R15,50.

Sanral said the tariffs, adjusted annually in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI), will increase by 3.12%, lower than last year’s 4.85% adjustment.

The agency’s communications and marketing general manager, Vusi Mona said the money collected at tolls is ‘necessary to maintain, operate and improve toll roads, as well as to service debt incurred to implement a toll road project’.

“The funds go a long way towards ensuring that Sanral fulfils its mandate of delivering quality road infrastructure that adds value to the lives of South African citizens,” said Mona.

He said the national road network is a precondition for providing basic services such as electricity, water, sanitation, telecommunications and public transport.

“This road network, therefore, needs to meet industrial, commercial and household needs,” said Mona.

“Sanral is empathetic to the South African public, considering the current state of the economy.

“However, it is equally important to introduce the adjustments to ensure that the agency continues to deliver safe and quality roads to the benefit of all road users,” he added.
