City of uMhlathuze intensifies efforts to combat illegal dumping
uMhlathuze encourages residents to use municipal skips or legal dumping sites in Empangeni as the campaign against illegal dumping continues
A new programme has been launched to strengthen the fight against illegal dumping in the City of uMhlathuze.
Mayor Xolani Ngwezi launched the programme in eSikhawini, where large amounts of illegally dumped waste have been removed – some of it discarded next to municipal skips.
“Maintaining clean neighbourhoods is essential for the well-being of communities and for preserving the beauty of the city. I appeal to residents who continue to dump waste illegally to refrain from doing so,” said Ngwezi.
He encourages residents to use municipal skips or legal dumping sites in Empangeni.
“Residents are reminded that dumping waste next to skips contributes to environmental pollution and creates health risks.
“It also costs the city millions of rands every year in clean-up operations, funds that could otherwise be used for service delivery and community development.”
“The city assures residents that this mayoral programme will reach all areas affected by illegal dumping,” added Ngwezi.
Residents can report illegal dumping on the city’s toll-free number: 0800 222 827.
