Mayor’s matter set for trial

City mayor back in Richards Bay court next month

The matter involving City of uMhlathuze Mayor Xolani Ngwezi is set for trial in the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court next month.

Appearing briefly on Thursday, the case was adjourned to 21 and 22 April for the trial to proceed.

Last year, Ngwezi was charged with counts of crimen injuria and defamation of character emanating from an interview that was aired on 11 March 2025 on 1KZNTV.

The complainant in the matter is one of the city’s security service providers, Cyril Paton.

Circumstances surrounding the matter emanate from sentiments expressed by Ngwezi during an interview regarding the termination of a contract security service provider.

KDP Concept (PTY) Ltd company boss Paton took the termination matter to the Pietermaritzburg High Court, and after the city’s legal representative and the company reached an out-of-court settlement, the contract was reinstated.
