KZN drivers, transport operators and pedestrians warned by MEC
KZN transport department vows to intensify law enforcement operations across province over Easter holidays
With hopes to reduce road fatalities by at least 10%, more than 3 000 law enforcement officers are set to be deployed to clamp down on lawlessness on provincial roads over the Easter holidays.
This was revealed by KZN Transport MEC Siboniso Duma, who said 348 traffic officers and 105 national police officers will be spread across KZN during the long weekend.
Duma was launching the Easter Holidays and Passover long weekend road safety campaign on Tuesday.
“As a department, we have set ourselves a target of achieving a 10% decrease in road fatalities this Easter holiday and Passover long weekend.
“During Easter 2025, we recorded a 38% decrease in the number of fatalities compared to the 43% we recorded in 2024” said Duma. The law enforcement officers will be operating 24 hours a day until
3 May, manning 148 multidisciplinary roadblocks – targeting, among other transgressions, drunk driving.”
This is part of the transport department’s #NenzaniLaEzweni road safety campaign.
“We will execute more than 118 speed operations in high-accident zones and other areas frequented by visitors and worshippers,” said Duma.
“More than 17 interprovincial roadblocks will be undertaken by a roving team of law enforcement officers.
“In addition, we understand there are school tours during the Easter holidays. In this regard, we will execute more than 91 operations focusing on scholar transport,” he said.
This as well as clamping down on unroadworthy vehicles.
“Unroadworthy vehicles and taxis will be removed. We will target not only drivers, but also the owners of these vehicles,” warned Duma.
“Critically, for the first time, through 28 pedestrian enforcement operations, we will clamp down on drunk pedestrians walking on busy roads.
“We will also penalise pedestrians who fail to use pedestrian bridges on various routes,” said the MEC.
