IEC staff visit elderly in Empangeni

Local IEC office extends voter registration and education to the elderly in Empangeni as preparation for the 2026 municipal elections continues

The IEC in King Cetshwayo District continues to lay the foundation for the 2026 local government elections through voter registration and education.

The regional office recently visited residents at Leisure Gardens retirement village in Empangeni to ensure their voter registration status is updated, and that they are registered in the correct voting district ahead of the municipal polls.

“The elderly residents at the facility are of particular importance to the Electoral Commission, especially as new residents are admitted to the centre now and again,” said IEC King Cetshwayo regional outreach officer Carol Dube.

“The visit targeted individuals who are not yet registered as voters. They were assisted with registration and provided with voter education to encourage active participation in the electoral process.”

Leisure Gardens residents’ committee member Ray Peyters commended the highly trained and efficient IEC officials.

“They were well-prepared. All the prior arrangements and practical exercise at registration went off exceptionally well,” said Peyters.

The current municipal council’s term will end after five years, following the last local government elections held on 1 November 2021.

The IEC said, in accordance with electoral regulations, the next elections must take place within a 90-day period from 2 November 2026 to 30 January 2027.

While a date for the upcoming elections is yet to be announced, the IEC is ready to go as soon as elections are proclaimed.
