“We often see a surge of opportunistic crime during the Easter holiday. These crimes are not limited to traditional break-ins while residents are away; they also include driveway hijackings, robberies and break-ins while residents entertain or sleep at home,” she explains.
Easter safety tips
1. Ensure your alarm is working with regular testing. Don’t wait until the day before you leave, as it may require technical assistance which could take several days.
2. Confirm that your security provider has access to your property in case of an emergency.
3. Trim back bushes or trees that could provide easy access over walls or gates or create hiding spots for criminals. Walk around your perimeter, inspecting walls and fences for any broken or damaged areas that may compromise their effectiveness.
4. If hiring a house-sitter, ensure they know how to use your alarm correctly. Otherwise, ask a neighbour or friend to occasionally turn on lights to create the impression that someone is home. Alternatively, consider setting your outside lights on a timer.
5. Double-check you have locked and secured all windows and doors before leaving. Turn off your geyser and any unnecessary electrical appliances to save on electricity and be environmentally friendly.
“If your children are home during the holidays, ensure they understand the importance of keeping all doors locked and that no one enters the home without your permission,” says Hattingh.
“If you have a home security system, teach them how to activate and deactivate it, and how and when to use security devices like panic buttons.
“Make a list of important phone numbers, including an emergency number, and show them where it is placed near the phone for quick access in emergencies.”
