NRB-Pirates sold out

Packed grandstand expected for NRB clash against Orlando Pirates at uMhlathuze Stadium on Friday

Half empty or half full?

That’s a good question as we look at where Richards Bay FC are standing with only eight Betway Premiership games to play before the season closes.

Having been a fingertip away from a top 8 place just a couple of weeks ago, fans are now looking worriedly downwards, in the direction of the relegation zone, as the Rich Boyz now occupy position 12 on the 16-team log.

Basement dwellers Magesi FC already look as good as buried under the foundations, with only 14 points accrued all season, but sometimes the dead do rise and when teams are fighting for survival they suddenly breathe new life.

However, the mere seven points that separate NRB from the other four sides below them are a bit too close for comfort: three more losses could put them into the peril of the relegation dog fight.

On the other hand, three wins will catapult them back into top 8 contention, especially since they are renowned for their late season spurts.

Their current position on the log table certainly does not do them justice, especially as all the 8 drawn games this season have been ones in which they dominated; they also lost 6 games by a single goal.

Richards Bay are a very good side, as all their opponents know and fear: there is no such thing as an easy game against the Rich Boyz, and I fully expect them to win the majority of the remaining fixtures.

After that, on Friday night, it’s the season’s big one against Orlando Pirates, also at the uMhlathuze Stadium in front of another packed grandstand, as it was recently against Kaizer Chiefs.

Tickets for the game were sold out within 30 minutes of going online and while most of the spectators will be clad in black and rooting for the Buccaneers, I’m backing our boys for revenge and another upset win!
