WATCH: Meerensee residents ‘gatvol’ over illegal occupation of greenbelt

Residents raise concerns about the illegal occupation of land in Meerensee

The Community Policing Forum (CPF) has raised serious concerns over the growing illegal occupation of the land surrounding Black Bass Dam.

Melinda Ashington of the Meerensee CPF says nearby complexes are overwhelmed with homeless people.

“Fighting breaks out between these people over drugs, they throw parties at the dam, [there is] filth and rubbish everywhere. Residents are gatvol and something needs to be done now,” said Ashington.

She added that they have had several meetings with the municipality and SAPS, which have borne no fruit thus far as the situation continues unabated.

Speaking on the issue, uMhlathuze Deputy Mayor Christo Botha said he would organise a public meeting in Meerensee in the coming days, and urged all to attend.
