CIT robbery suspect found dead in getaway vehicle

Deceased suspect reportedly injured himself while setting up explosives during the CIT robbery.

One of the suspects believed to have been involved in the cash-in-transit (CIT) heist that occurred in the Kranskop CBD on Monday was on Tuesday found dead inside an abandoned vehicle.

The vehicle was found along the gravel road near the Tugela River, towards Nkandla.

Preliminary police investigations revealed the deceased injured himself while setting up explosives during the CIT robbery.

The CIT vehicle involved in Monday’s heist was robbed of an undisclosed amount of money, and three security guards were reportedly robbed of their firearms.

Four vehicles were also reportedly hijacked and were used as getaway vehicles by the suspects.

The suspects fired shots towards a police station during the robbery, but no police officers or members were wounded.

KZN SAPS spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said a manhunt is ongoing for more suspects. There are believed to have been at least 12 in total.

“Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the suspects is urged to contact the nearest police station or call our Crime Stop number on 08600 10111. Anonymous tip-offs can also be relayed via the MySAPS app,” said Netshiunda.
