Call for good leadership
Interfaith symposium creates platform to discuss issues of advancing democracy, law-making, and oversight
Religious leaders need to lead by example.
This message was shared by King Cetshwayo District Mayor Sikhumbuzo Dlamini at the Interfaith Symposium held at Melmoth Indoor Sports Centre on Friday.
“We were created in the image of God, and I think we are abusing that gift. There is no creature as dangerous as the human being. You are all here to pray and teach each other how to live in peace and harmony,” he said.
The symposium provides a platform to discuss issues of advancing democracy, law-making, and the oversight role of the Legislature in KwaZulu-Natal.
The event was attended by KZN Deputy Speaker Mmabatho Tembe, members of KZN Legislature, MECs, HODs, councillors, and religious leaders.
The Public Participation and Petitions Standing Committee Chairperson, Ncamisile Nkwanyana, said that the role of religious leaders in the fight against social ills remains central to a progressive society.
“Our main aim is to make sure they know what it means to be a church leader, and how to handle a church.
“In most cases when a person talks about a church leader, we expect an innocent person. But these days, we find some involved in criminal activities.
“They need… to portray the good image of God,” Nkwanyana said.
uMthonjaneni Mayor Mbangiseni Biyela, during his welcoming remarks, said he was grateful the event was hosted in Mthonjaneni.
“I think this will assist in uplifting the local economy, even though it was for one day.”
