IEC preps for voter registration weekend in June

IEC King Cetshwayo District gears up for 20-21 June voter registration weekend ahead of 4 November local government elections.

THE Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in King Cetshwayo District is preparing for next month’s voter registration weekend, set for 20 and 21 June.

This follows last week’s announcement that the local government elections will be held on 4 November.

To boost participation, the IEC has been conducting outreach programmes in various communities, with planned visits to areas affected by demarcation changes.

“From 22 to 24 May, we will be conducting what we call targeted communication and registration by visiting all communities that have been affected by delimitation changes,” said IEC King Cetshwayo regional outreach officer Carol Dube.

She said, in April they visited 56 schools for voter education and registration, with more programmes running until the voter registration weekend.

Registered voters will cast their ballots on 4 November, as announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa recently.

While the date has been set, it’s yet to be proclaimed by Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa.

“In terms of the law, the official proclamation will be made by [Hlabisa] at which point the voters’ roll will be closed,” said Sy Mamabolo, chief electoral officer.

“The IEC encourages all eligible South Africans who are not yet registered, or who have changed their place of residence, to ensure they are registered in the voting district where they ordinarily reside, as voters may only cast their ballots at the polling station where they are registered.”
