Injured seafarer evacuated off bulk carrier
Seafarer extricated from vessel en route to Richards Bay
A Chinese seafarer is recovering in hospital after he was injured on a bulk carrier that was en route to Richards Bay.
He was successfully extricated from the vessel in an operation led by the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) in Richards Bay last week.
NSRI Station 19 in Richards Bay launched the rescue craft OceanGuardian, accompanied by NSRI Maritime Extrication (MEX) crew, a Netcare 911 ambulance services rescue paramedic and a Faith Med ambulance services rescue paramedic.
“We rendezvoused with the motor vessel offshore of Richards Bay at the outer anchorage, where two NSRI MEX crewmen and two rescue paramedics were transferred onto the vessel.
“In cooperation with the ship’s medical crew, the patient was further stabilised by the rescue paramedics and secured in personal protective gear.
“In a technical, high-angle extrication operation, the patient was transferred onto our rescue craft, followed by the NSRI MEX crew and the paramedics,” said NSRI Richards Bay station commander Norman Rautenbach.
Upon arrival at the NSRI rescue base, the injured seafarer was transported to the hospital in a stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.
