Strike action blocks R66 near Gingindlovu

Road blocked as residents protest on R66 near Gingindlovu

Motorists travelling on the R66 between Gingindlovu and Mvutshini had to use alternative routes this (Wednesday) morning as residents protested a lack of water in uMlalazi’s Ward 16.

The public unrest has resulted in road blockages and severe traffic delays in the area.

The water service authority in King Cetshwayo District said it was aware of the situation, citing a lack of electricity supply as the main challenge to distributing water.

“We have met with the community over this matter, but the main challenge is that they do not have a power supply and we cannot pump water to them,” said King Cetshwayo District communications manager Thami Shangase.

According to reports, the community’s electricity transformers were disconnected due to high levels of illegal connections – a situation that has left them in the dark and without clean water for a prolonged period.
