Public urged to watch salt intake

Consumers encouraged to read food labels and reduce salt intake as country marks World Salt Awareness Week

South Africans are being urged to be mindful of the food they consume and to reduce salt intake.

This plea was made by the chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Health, Faith Muthambi, as the country marks World Salt Awareness Week, which runs from 12 to 18 May.

World Salt Awareness Week seeks to raise awareness about the health risks associated with excessive salt consumption, including hypertension, heart disease and stroke.

She called on both the food industry and consumers to play an active role in promoting better public health.

“We urge all South Africans to read food labels carefully, reduce salt in their diets and support initiatives aimed at building a healthier nation,” said Mathambi.

She stated that reducing salt intake remains one of the most effective measures to improve public health and prevent non-communicable diseases.
