The South African Police Service (SAPS) has warned that people seen recklessly handling firearms on social media videos could face criminal charges under the Firearms Control Act, The Witness reports.

This comes after a video of two women handling and cocking firearms inside a house began circulating widely on social media, raising concerns about whether they were authorised or properly trained to use the weapons.

National police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, said they were concerned that the women seen in the video may not have been properly trained or authorised to handle firearms.

“SAPS therefore warns that the reckless handling and misuse of firearms pose a serious danger to both the individuals involved and members of the public,” said Mathe.

Mathe reminded the public that the Firearms Control Act requires anyone handling or using a firearm to be legally authorised and, where applicable, in possession of a valid firearm licence or permit.

She also warned firearm owners that they could face criminal charges if they allowed unlicensed or unauthorised individuals access to their firearms.

“The registered owner of a firearm may face criminal charges if found to have allowed unauthorised persons access to the firearm,” she said.

Mathe stressed that even toy guns, imitation firearms or blank guns could have legal consequences if they are used in a way that causes fear, intimidation or creates the impression that they are real firearms.

She said firearms should never be used recklessly or for entertainment purposes, including social media content.

Members of the public have been urged to report illegal possession, misuse or reckless handling of firearms to the nearest police station or anonymously through the Crime Stop hotline.
