KZN Agriculture extends much-needed support to cooperatives in Nkandla

Some R23-million has been allocated to support cooperatives in the Nkandla region.

This was revealed on Thursday by Agriculture and Rural Development MEC Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa.

She said funds would go towards mechanisation, construction of two dipping tanks, rehabilitation of three dipping tanks, and fencing of field crops.

KaMadlopha-Mthethwa explained that R400 000 was spent on planting and fencing 125.5 hectares of land, benefitting three cooperatives and local communities.

“Mpotholo, Ntatshana and Chithimpuphu benefitted. Crop fields have seen 42 women and 12 youth-led initiatives, as well as three people with disabilities receiving assistance that includes indigenous chickens and goats,” she said.

During her oversight visit, the MEC noted that three projects in the Zondi, Mchunu and Dlomo traditional areas are also progressing well.

Last May, the department pledged to assist these communities, which she says now benefit from food security and economic empowerment.
