Mtubatuba set to become an economic hub

Plans for a new shopping centre valued at over R400 million, and a further R2.1 billion mixed-use development in Mtubatuba

A major private sector investment is set to transform Mtubatuba into an economic hub, driving local economic growth, job creation and sustainable development within uMkhanyakude District.

It will also improve access to retail services while stimulating local business opportunities.

Among these investments is the construction of a new shopping centre valued at over R400 million, and a further R2.1 billion mixed-use development.

This landmark development demonstrates growing investor confidence in the area’s economic potential.

The mixed-use development includes a hotel, truck stop, affordable housing, retail centre, taxi rank, service station, drive-thru facilities, Bellamont Solar Park, and a wellness centre.

Speaking on the development, Mtubatuba Mayor, Mxolisi Mthethwa, welcomed the investment with great enthusiasm as it signalled a new era of growth and opportunity for the people of the town and region.

“Beyond the infrastructure that will be developed, these projects represent hope for many of our residents through employment opportunities, skills development and improved access to essential services.

“As a municipality, we remain committed to creating an enabling environment that attracts investment and accelerates socio-economic transformation,” he said.

Mthethwa explained that this development will be implemented in three key phases.

“Phase 1 focuses on logistics and housing development, including the construction of the truck stop and the delivery of affordable housing units, providing immediate infrastructure support and addressing local accommodation needs,” he said.

He added that phase 2 will be the expansion of commercial and mobility infrastructure through the development of a retail centre, drive-thru facilities, and a service station, aimed at boosting economic activity and convenience services.

“Phase 3 will focus on public transport and sustainable energy infrastructure, including the development of a taxi rank and the Bellamont Solar Park, strengthening mobility and advancing renewable energy initiatives,” he added.

Mthethwa further explained that his municipality acknowledges the role played by all stakeholders involved in bringing these investments to fruition and looks forward to continued collaboration with investors, government departments and local communities to ensure that the benefits of these developments are shared broadly among residents of Mtubatuba.

“As implementation progresses, the municipality will continue to provide updates on key milestones, employment opportunities and community engagement processes,” he said.
