Sanca Kick Your Habit: Understanding substance abuse through a 7-day challenge

Zululand Observer sub-editor Tamlyn Cramer challenges Zululanders to ditch a habit and build substance abuse awareness.

Substance abuse is firmly on the agenda this week, as Sanca launches its annual Kick Your Habit campaign.

The campaign is held between 22 and 28 June, coinciding with Sanca Week and incorporating the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on 26 June.

Zululanders are encouraged to participate in this year’s Kick Your Habit campaign by ditching a habit, or something important to them, for the seven days.

The aim is to make addiction more relatable and help non-addicts empathise with those desperately caught up in the addiction cycle.

Zululand Observer sub-editor Tamlyn Cramer has heeded the call and chosen to give up sugar for the week.

“Sugar forms part of my everyday life, not least in my tea that I enjoy throughout each day,” said Tamlyn.

“This means I am not only giving up sugar, but tea also, as I cannot bring myself to drink tea with no sugar!”

Tamlyn challenges others to take up the baton for this worthy cause on behalf of Sanca Zululand.

“I’m only on day one of the challenge, and, while the withdrawals from a lack of sugar and caffeine have not kicked in yet, I know what I’m in for – headaches, dizziness, fatigue and irritability while my body craves what I’m withholding from it.

“While unhealthy and addictive, sugar is by no means in the same league as hard drugs, or even nicotine and alcohol.

“But it is still an addiction that my body needs to fight, and I’m grateful to have support from my loved ones – who have already said they’ll refrain from eating chocolate in my presence!

“This makes me realise the importance of support from loved ones when an addict gives up their substance of choice. If that support is lacking, it’s easy to fall back into the cycle of substance abuse.”

Anyone wanting support or advice on substance abuse and misuse is urged to contact Sanca Zululand on 035 7723290.
