Elections 2026: Are you eligible to vote?

Who can vote in municipal elections?

With local government elections on the horizon, you need to confirm your voting eligibility and registration status before it’s too late.

Voting is one of the most powerful ways to shape your community – from service delivery to local development – but you can only take part if you meet a few key requirements.

Who can vote in municipal elections?

To cast your vote in South Africa’s municipal elections, you must:

· Be a South African citizen
· Be 18 years or older on voting day
· Have a valid form of identification, such as a green bar-coded ID book | a smart ID card | a valid temporary ID certificate (TID)
· Be registered on the voters’ roll
· Be registered in the area where you live (and vote at that voting station)

How to check your registration status

One of the most common reasons people miss out on voting is that they aren’t registered, or they are registered in the wrong area.

Your registration determines where you vote, so your details must be correct and up to date.

It’s quick and easy to check if you’re registered with the Independent Electoral Commission:

· Visit: www.elections.org.za or mobi.elections.org.za
· Or send an SMS with your ID number to the IEC (standard rates apply)

Don’t sit this one out. Check your status, get ready, and make your vote count.
