WORK began in earnest this (Thursday) morning on the rehabilitation of Medway Road, after Transnet on Wednesday banned coal-laden trucks from using the Port of Richards Bay’s east gate.

A massive combined team from Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) and the City of uMhlathuze descended on site today to start the 4-day remediation programme.

Activities began with removal of litter, and sweeping and collection of cargo spillages for later lawful disposal of the contaminated material.

Large gangs wearing full PPE and masks utilising a pay loader and Bobcat could be seen working at full pace throughout the morning.

This in response to complaints by the Richards Bay Clean Air Association and numerous community activists, including the business and environmental sectors.
