Warnings of heavy rains have been issued for KZN

Residents are being urged to heed warnings of disruptive rains expected over parts of KZN, including the Zululand region, from Tuesday afternoon.

The SA Weather Service (SAWS) has upgraded its earlier warning of yellow level 2 and 4 disruptive rains to a more severe orange level 6.

The affected areas include: Big Five Hlabia, Hluhluwe, Mandeni, Mtubatuba, uMhlathuze and uMlalazi.

“A cut-off low is over the southern interior of South Africa, and a ridging high pressure situated south of South Africa is advecting moisture over KZN,” the warning states.

“These weather systems will lead to scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers over KZN today (Tuesday), but isolated in the extreme north.

“Scattered showers and thundershowers are expected tomorrow (Wednesday), but isolated in the extreme north-east.

“Significant rainfall amounts are expected, which may lead to flooding of roads and settlements, damage to infrastructure and mud-based houses.”

KZN Cogta committee chairperson Marlaine Nair has urged residents in affected areas to take precautions and contact emergency services should assistance be required.

“KwaZulu-Natal knows how quickly severe weather can place lives, homes and infrastructure at risk. Taking warnings seriously and acting early can help prevent avoidable loss and tragedy,” added Nair.

“Avoid unnecessary travel where conditions are hazardous, and never attempt to drive or walk through flooded roads, low-lying bridges or swollen rivers.”
