It is a known fact that if one lives in Zululand, or is visiting, one should always look inside your shoes before putting them on.

The lesson was brought home on Thursday when renowned snake catcher ‘Fearless’ Fred Lubbe was brought a pair of shoes a domestic worker had washed and left in the sun to dry.

“Carrying one shoe on a little spade, she said something inside was moving,” said Fred.

“It turned out to be a small agama lizard, and I had to cut the lining of the shoe to free it. I released it in my garden next to the kitchen window and all ended well for everyone.”

Although very few lizards are poisonous, they do sometimes pack a nasty bite; but the big takeaway from the incident is that it could have been a mamba or cobra – and even their young are deadly.
