WATCH: No arrests in N2 cash-in-transit heist
Cash-in-transit heist causes chaos on the N2 near Port Durnford during early morning traffic
No arrests have yet been made in the cash-in-transit (CIT) heist that took place on the N2 near Port Durnford on Monday morning.
The incident occurred at 6.40am, quickly bringing morning traffic to a standstill on the busy national route.
This was the second CIT robbery to have occurred in the region in less than a week; the previous incident taking place on the R66 between eShowe and Gingindlovu on Thursday.
Speaking about Monday’s incident, Hawks spokesperson Simphiwe Mhlongo confirmed that a case of CIT robbery has been opened and that the Richards Bay Serious Organised Crime Investigation members are investigating.
An incident report released on Monday afternoon confirmed that 10 suspects had approached the CIT vehicle in two white SUVs.
The suspects opened fire on the CIT vehicle to stop and rob it.
They stole the CIT guards’ weapons as well as an undisclosed amount of money before fleeing the scene.
